Wordpress Plugins

How Many WordPress Plugins Are Too Many?

Plugins are nifty little bits of software that can be added to your WordPress website to make it do more things.

The standard WordPress software does a lot, but not everything you might want on your website, and plugins fill the gaps.

There are thousands of them both free and premium, that you can choose from to add magic to your website.

And that’s where the problem lies!  There are so many to choose from and extra functionality you can add, that it’s tempting to try lots of them and clog up your website.

We see so many websites that have had way too many plugins added to them, and some not even being used for anything.

Why is it an issue to have too many?

There are 3 main reasons why you want to be sure to only have the plugins that you really need to make your website work the way you want it to:

  1. Security

Sadly there are some very sad people out in internet land who will try to access and attack your website, either to add nasties to it, or just for fun?!?!

Both WordPress.org and the developers of the different plugins are constantly updating their software to fix any vulnerability that might allow the hackers in.

The more plugins you have, the more opportunities there might be for one of them to not be updated and pose a risk

This is also one of the reasons you really must update all of your themes and plugins on a regular basis – see our video tutorial on how to do that

  1. Conflicts

Sometimes different plugins from different developers don’t play nicely together – known as a “compatibility error”.

This can result in one or more of the plugins not working as they should, or it could stop a web page from loading properly, or it could break your site completely and result in the dreaded “white screen” that takes some time to fix.

  1. A SLOOWW Website

There are lots of techy reasons for this (which we will spare you the details of) but the more plugins you have on your website, the slower it will be to load.

This is not good for your website visitors.  In today’s attention deficit age, at least on-line, we want websites to load quickly, and if they don’t we give up and go elsewhere.  You do not want your web visitors to do that, so you want your website to load quickly.

What really matters then, is not so much how many plugins you are using, but that you are using only the ones you need, and you make sure they are kept up to date – both by the developer and you.
