WordPress.com vs WordPress.org:
What’s the Difference?

We are often asked what the difference is between WordPress.com and WordPress.org, in fact many people don’t realise there is a difference, let alone how it might affect their website.

Let’s clarify it for you, and explain which you need to use to create your business website.

First of all, we should answer the question …

What is WordPress?

Originally WordPress was created as a blogging platform, but over the past couple of decades it has evolved into much more, and can now be used to create all kinds of websites, from blogs to business, and even e-commerce shops.

WordPress is now the software that sits behind over 1/3 of all internet sites – that is al lot of websites!

What is WordPress.com?

WordPress.com is a free website service, not website software.  You don’t have to download anything or install it. You sign up for an account and create a site that is hosted by WordPress.com. You will be given a choice of templates and suggested plugins and a yoursite.wordpress.com URL.

Essentially, everything is handled for you from the moment you sign up, and it is all absolutely free.

They also handle backups and maintenance and upgrades for you, which means that you don’t have to worry about your site security.

What is WordPress.org?

WordPress.org is the free software that you can add to your web hosting to build your website. It is also known as the “self-hosted WordPress”,

It is free to download and use, but you will need to purchase your domain name and pay for web hosting.

It is this software that we use to build all of our client’s websites, mainly because it gives us so much freedom around themes and plugins, so we can create a website that does exactly what our client wants.

With WordPress.com you are limited to their approved plugins and themes, unless you pay for more than comes as standard with the free offering!

Which is Best for You?

If you want a simple little Blog website for personal or hobby writing, and you don’t mind that the URL will be yourname.wordpress.com then WordPress.com will do the job for you, for free.

If you are creating a website for your business, then you should go for the WordPress.org software, installed on a web hosting account.
